Fountain City United is the heart of our extended brass band family, a vibrant network of friends, family, alumni, and supporters dedicated to advancing the mission, music, and mentorship of Fountain City Brass Band and Fountain City Youth Brass Academy. Rooted in community and driven by purpose, Fountain City United exists to strengthen the bonds that make its organization more than just an ensemble; it makes it a family. At its core, Fountain City United is about people coming together to create lasting impact. Through volunteerism, advocacy, fundraising, music-making, and fellowship, its members help ensure that the Fountain City legacy of excellence continues to thrive for generations to come. Whether supporting concerts and events, mentoring young musicians, or expanding access to meaningful musical experiences, Fountain City United plays a vital role in shaping the future of its programs. Its reach extends beyond the stage. It is committed to enriching lives through music, mentorship, and service, both within Kansas City and across the broader musical community. Musical Director

Helen Harrelson

Helen Harrelson began her musical career with the Rotherham Schools Band and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain before earning her BMus (Hons) at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). During her time in the UK, she performed with world-class conductors and became one of the first female members of the renowned Black Dyke Band. In 2007, she relocated to Kansas City for a cross-cultural study of music education, where she joined the Fountain City Brass Band and co-founded the internationally recognized Fountain City Youth Brass Academy. A dedicated educator and clinician, she has presented at prestigious events such as the Midwest Clinic and the International Women’s Brass Conference. She has served on the faculties of multiple universities and summer schools, including the North American Brass Band Summer School and MidAmerica Nazarene University. Her contributions to music education have earned her the Kansas Bandmasters Association’s recognition for outstanding service, as well as the ECKMEA High School Band Director of the Year award in 2021 and 2025. As a Besson/Buffet Crampon performing artist and consultant, Dr. Harrelson remains a leading advocate for brass pedagogy and performance.
