Dr. Jim Buckner is Professor of Trumpet and Chair of the Department of Music at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Buckner is principal trumpeter with the Arkansas Brass quintet, the South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, and MASS BRASS, a 20-piece brass and percussion ensemble. Buckner was a founding board member of the Smoky Mountain Brass Band and the Mississippi River Brass Band (Quincy, Illinois), performing on soprano cornet and competing at Championships I, II, IV, V, and VII. He also played soprano cornet with the Henderson State University Brass Band at Championship XXI in Little Rock, Arkansas. Buckner soloed with the Smoky Mountain Brass Band at the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee, and was named Outstanding Soloist, Championship Section, at Championship V with the Mississippi River Brass Band. He has been a featured soloist with school, college, and community bands and orchestras throughout the South and Midwest, and in September, 1995, he presented a recital at the Moscow International Trumpet Festival. Buckner received the Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Education from Iowa State University, the Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Michigan, and the Doctor of Music in Trumpet Performance from Northwestern University. Before coming to Henderson State University, he taught at Illinois State University, Quincy University, Western Carolina University, Truman State University, and West High School in Waterloo, Iowa. |
